Extremadura New Energies, the Spanish subsidiary of Infinity Lithium Corporation, has joined the significant private-public collaboration SOI H2-ALEX, which focuses on the development of green hydrogen in the Alentejo and Extremadura areas of Spain and Portugal.

As part of the industrial lithium chemistry project, the company intends to use green hydrogen and other renewable energies.

Extremadura will also evaluate the possible availability of green hydrogen from numerous sources, including local production, in the future.

Sustainability requirements of the highest caliber

Extremadura’s chief executive officer, Ramón Jiménez, emphasized the initiative’s significance and the role that hydrogen would play in delivering an environmentally and socially sustainable project in Cáceres.

Jiménez continued, “The new idea created by Extremadura New Energies proposes using green hydrogen instead of natural gas for calcining and roasting lithium-bearing materials.

“The use of green hydrogen enables a significant reduction in the CO2 footprint of the battery-grade lithium compounds that will be generated on-site in Cáceres.

“This, in addition to the use of 100 percent renewable energy and the incorporation of electric vehicles, allows us to create an environmentally and socially sustainable project by minimizing the key energy sources that release greenhouse gases.

This plant’s carbon footprint is unique in Europe and meets the highest sustainability criteria.

SOI H2-ALEX alliance

The SOI H2-ALEX partnership is centered on the green hydrogen pipeline project supported in Portugal by the Agência Regional de Desenvolvimento do Alentejo (Alentejo Regional Development Agency) and involves the collaboration of Junta de Extremadura.

The business organization LOABRE and the Extremadura electric mobility group CarEX represent SOI H2 in Spain.

Extremadura New Energies recently executed collaboration agreements with a number of local business and community organizations, including LOABRE and CarEX.

H2-ALEX is also committed to facilitating initiatives linked with the energy transition based on the deployment of abundant renewable energies such as solar, biomass, and hydroelectric.

Forward-looking

Extremadura is evaluating the supply of green hydrogen from localized sources and potentially from the planned Iberian green hydrogen pipeline that will pass through Cáceres.

It is possible to evaluate the localized supply of renewable energy in Cáceres via a photovoltaic installation and the production of green hydrogen in direct alignment with the project.

Furthermore, Extremadura is investigating potential industrial sites in the Cáceres area for these renewable energy installations, which would be precisely matched with the project’s energy needs.
