The world’s largest green hydrogen generation plant, near Puertollano (Ciudad Real), is already up and running. This project, built by Iberdrola for Fertiberia, already produces renewable hydrogen for the manufacturing of green ammonia and fertilizers, thanks to a 20 MW electrolyzer that separates hydrogen and oxygen molecules from water using the electrolysis process.

Iberdrola picked Ingeteam as its technology partner to equip the battery system, which included a turnkey supply.

Ingeteam has provided the lithium-ion batteries integrated into 40-foot containers with water cooling, as well as the battery converters integrated into power stations with the remainder of the medium voltage connecting parts. Ingeteam was also responsible for the storage system’s field assembly and subsequent start-up.

A 100 MW photovoltaic solar plant and a 5 MW / 20 MWh battery energy storage system are also included in this project.

Green hydrogen is the starting ingredient for making green ammonia, which is then used to make low-carbon fertilizers.

The battery system is used to store a portion of the solar energy generated throughout the day so that it may be used when the sun is no longer shining. In this approach, the amount of energy available from the sun for the generation of green hydrogen by electrolysis may be increased.
