Intelligent Energy, a technology firm based in Leicestershire, UK, has announced it is set to start production of its zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell units.

These innovative energy solutions have the capability to power vehicles from cars to buses, leaving nothing behind except water – a game-changer in the path towards sustainable mobility.

Intelligent Energy’s Innovative Fuel Cells

The company has already begun testing its first hydrogen fuel cell car engine, which is due for installation in an SUV next month. The units, known as IE-DRIVE, come in two variations: one for passenger cars and the other for heavy-duty applications such as buses, trucks, trains, and power plants.

These advanced hydrogen fuel cell units are the result of years of dedicated research and refinement by Intelligent Energy, originally spun off from Loughborough University. Now, they are in the final stages of testing before being dispatched to customers in South Korea, the UK, the US, Spain, and Taiwan.

An International Reach

In the autumn of last year, the company, which employs 250 people, signed an agreement with Hogreen Air to assemble an initial 100 high-power fuel cells under license for South Korea and other Asian countries. These units will primarily find use in power plant applications.

“First deliveries are starting this month to customers in the UK and the EU, with shipments to customers in Asia and the USA later this year,” a spokeswoman for Intelligent Energy confirmed. The units are planned for a wide range of applications, from powering buses, trucks, and cars to providing zero-emission generators in Europe and hydrogen-based power stations in South Korea.

An Ambitious Future

The production line, recently inaugurated by Loughborough MP Jane Hunt, is not only geared towards vehicular applications. Intelligent Energy also revealed plans to develop power units for aero engines, warehouse trucks, and drones, showcasing a diverse and ambitious vision for the future of hydrogen fuel cells.

Jane Hunt remarked, “Loughborough can be proud to say that companies like Intelligent Energy are based here and design and build such brilliant technology in the East Midlands.”

The upcoming production of Intelligent Energy’s hydrogen fuel cell units signifies an exciting advance in sustainable technology. With its comprehensive range of applications and global reach, the company is poised to play a pivotal role in the future of green energy.
