A total of six projects to convert diesel trains to hydrogen ones would each receive 300 million euros from the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
Italy is advancing in the hydrogen train sector at a faster rate than many other European nations. The 300 million euro budget has just been set aside by the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure as part of a national programme to fund the conversion of various lines around the nation.
In specifics, new railway rolling stock will be purchased with 24 million euros. The generation of green hydrogen, its storage, and the construction of refuelling infrastructure will be paid for with the remaining 276 million euros.
Six Italian regions—Lombardy, Campania, Calabria, Puglia, as well as the islands of Sicily and Sardinia—will get the funding, which will be distributed to railway firms.
50% of the work must be finished by June 30, 2025, in terms of deadlines. By June 30, 2026, the projects must be completed, which is one year later.
The railway industry will not receive large incentives to transition to hydrogen. The Italian government has announced the release of a 100 million euro fund to finance the construction of 36 new refuelling stations across the nation by 2026.
