Japan remains committed to investing in Malaysia’s energy sector, with a particular focus on green hydrogen.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who also serves as the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, highlighted Japan’s ongoing investments in Sarawak and its continued support for Malaysia’s green energy initiatives.

Last December, Sarawak began large-scale production of green hydrogen primarily for the Japanese market under a tripartite agreement with the Sarawak Economic Development Corp (SEDC) and two Japanese firms. “They are seeking our support and cooperation,” Fadillah noted. “We cannot make a final decision at this meeting; it needs to be brought back for government-level approval.”

The discussion occurred following a courtesy visit Fadillah held with representatives from Singapore, Vietnam, Brunei, and Japan during his trip to Peru for the Energy Ministers Meeting under the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) from August 15-16, 2024. These countries expressed their readiness to support Malaysia’s energy plans.

Fadillah elaborated that the upcoming ASEAN chairmanship by Malaysia played a crucial role in bilateral discussions. During a round table session, APEC countries shared strategies for energy transition focused on supplying clean and renewable energy while ensuring energy supply security, safety, and inclusivity.
