Java 9 and 10 Ultra-Selective Catalytic Reduction (USCR) power plant is poised to lead the charge as the world’s first hybrid power facility to incorporate green ammonia and green hydrogen into its production process.

This revolutionary step towards net-zero emissions is the result of a momentous memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between PT Indo Raya Tenaga (IRT), the power plant’s owner and operator, and Doosan Enerbility during the ASEAN Business Roundtable Meeting on September 7, 2023. Notably, this significant pact was witnessed by government representatives from both Indonesia and South Korea.

The Java 9 and 10 power plant, in collaboration with its Korean counterpart, is gearing up to harness the power of green ammonia and green hydrogen to align with the ambitious net-zero emission goals of Indonesia and South Korea. Peter Wijaya, President Director of IRT, affirmed this commitment in a statement released in Jakarta, emphasizing the plant’s unique use of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology, which allows it to operate as a hybrid power plant, utilizing ammonia as a fuel source for up to 60 percent of its energy input.

Wijaya elucidated on the rationale behind incorporating green ammonia, stating, “Why did Java 9 and 10 power plant initiate the use of green ammonia? Because, as we know, Java 9 and 10 is the only power plant in Indonesia that uses SCR technology. Thanks to this technology, Java 9 and 10 can be considered a hybrid power plant that uses ammonia as a fuel, up to 60 percent of its energy input. This has been reviewed with PLN engineering, and the results are satisfactory.”

As part of the MoU, the partners will conduct a collaborative study to develop a comprehensive roadmap and supply chain plan for green ammonia in Indonesia. Remarkably, there are currently no power plants in the country utilizing green ammonia and green hydrogen for commercial purposes.

However, meticulous assessments carried out by IRT, in consultation with stakeholders in South Korea, have revealed that the SCR technology-based power plant’s boilers can efficiently run on green ammonia and green hydrogen, accounting for up to 60 percent of the energy input required for electricity production.

This historic agreement signifies the Java 9 and 10 power plant’s steadfast commitment to expanding its capabilities as a hybrid generator. Simultaneously, it addresses the challenges related to stimulating green ammonia demand and establishing a robust supply chain in Indonesia. It also underscores the plant’s unwavering dedication to fostering the green ammonia and green hydrogen market in Indonesia.

Shin Dongkyu, Vice President of Doosan Enerbility, highlighted the company’s unyielding commitment to environmental sustainability, noting, “We strive to create high-tech products that are environmentally friendly.”

Notably, this endeavor follows a previous agreement between IRT and PLN Engineering, which aims to explore the maximum utilization of green ammonia as a potential fuel source for the Java 9 and 10 power plant. This agreement was formalized through an MoU signed during the Group of 20 Summit in Bali in November 2022.

Green ammonia and green hydrogen are hailed as fuels with the exceptional attribute of producing zero carbon emissions throughout their production and utilization. These fuels represent pivotal solutions in the ongoing global energy transition, with advanced nations already adopting them for power generation and electric vehicles.
