Jeju Special Self-Governing Province is positioning itself at the forefront of Korea’s energy transition through a strategic partnership with Hyundai Motor Group, aiming to achieve a 70% renewable energy ratio by 2035.

The agreement, signed during the 2025 Green Hydrogen Global Forum at the Jeju International Convention Center, targets a comprehensive shift toward carbon neutrality by leveraging green hydrogen and distributed energy systems.

The collaboration will focus on eight key projects spanning green hydrogen production, vehicle integration, and community-based energy solutions. In hydrogen, the initiative includes developing cost-effective production technologies, creating a hydrogen vehicle–friendly environment across the island, and introducing hydrogen-powered trams. Additionally, Jeju plans to decarbonize port operations through hydrogen logistics systems, complementing its ongoing hydrogen economy initiatives, which include commercial green hydrogen sales launched last November and hydrogen bus operations since 2023.

Distributed energy represents a parallel focus, with pilot programs for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging and Korea’s first commercialized V2G system. By integrating electric vehicle (EV) batteries into energy storage networks, Jeju aims to address intermittent solar and wind generation challenges while expanding V2G EV adoption and related infrastructure policies.

Governor Oh Young-hun emphasized that the partnership is a key driver for Jeju’s energy transition roadmap, aiming not only for regional carbon neutrality but also for global leadership in sustainable energy systems. By combining Hyundai’s technological expertise with Jeju’s renewable energy infrastructure, the province intends to demonstrate scalable solutions for hydrogen integration, distributed energy, and renewable energy management that can inform national and international efforts.
