Johnson Matthey was selected by Equinor and Linde Engineering for the H2H Saltend low-carbon hydrogen project.

For one of the largest low carbon hydrogen (ccs-enabled) projects in the UK, H2H Saltend, Johnson Matthey (JM) has secured an LCH technology license with Equinor and Linde Engineering. JM was chosen by Equinor for the significant FEED contract along with our EPC partner Linde Engineering. The license counts towards JM’s milestone of winning more than ten additional large-scale projects by 2023/24.

One of the first facilities of this size in the UK, H2H Saltend produces low-carbon hydrogen with a 600-megawatt capacity with a carbon capture rate of over 95%. It contributes to the development of the Humber as a center for low-carbon hydrogen on a global scale. This is the first stage of Equinor’s “Hydrogen to Humber” initiative, which aims to produce 1.8 gigawatts of low-carbon hydrogen in the area by 2030, or about 20% of the UK’s planned national production.

Located at the energy-intensive Saltend Chemicals Park, east of Hull, it is scheduled to be operational by 2027 and will contribute to a reduction of up to one-third in the park’s emissions. In order to accomplish this, low-carbon hydrogen will either be combined with natural gas at Equinor and SSE Thermal’s Saltend Power Station or will directly replace natural gas in a number of industrial facilities, reducing the carbon intensity of their goods.

Almost 890,000 tonnes of CO2 will be absorbed annually, which is the same as removing 500,000 automobiles from the road.

For the larger Zero Carbon Humber initiative, which seeks to make the region net zero by 2040, H2H Saltend is an essential project.

Johnson Matthey’s Catalyst Technologies’ Chief Commercial Officer, Alberto Giovanzana, stated: The reduction of carbon emissions will be made possible in large part by hydrogen.

The creation of hydrogen using Johnson Matthey’s LCH technology will be possible with 95% fewer emissions, showcasing the UK’s innovation in low-carbon technologies. We’re thrilled that this innovative initiative will use our technology at its core to significantly reduce energy consumption for our clients.
