Terrestrial Energy, located in Canada, has announced a collaboration with KBR to research the use of zero-emission thermal energy for hydrogen and ammonia synthesis. KBR is a significant supplier of ammonia production technology to chemical facility owners across the world, having its headquarters in the United States and its international operations center in the United Kingdom.

The cooperation will examine the integration of Terrestrial Energy’s Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR) nuclear cogeneration technology for usage in green ammonia and hydrogen production by KBR’s market-leading energy consulting services team and Terrestrial Energy. KBR’s program management and integrator solutions teams will continue to assist the development of commercial frameworks for future deployment and routes to market for IMSR cogeneration ammonia manufacturing technology.

Terrestrial Energy’s IMSR plant employs Generation IV fission technology, which powers the facility’s 585°C thermal energy source, which is ideal for a wide range of industrial applications, including the manufacture of green hydrogen and ammonia.

“This deal… establishes a key industrial link in the manufacturing of low-cost, zero-emission ammonia.” “Its achievement will give a key worldwide decarbonization goal to a hard-to-abate industrial sector and boost inexpensive food supply,” Terrestrial Energy CEO Simon Irish said.

The arrangement “aligns with our commitment to create innovative technologies and offer solutions that assist clients to achieve their most vital business objectives with sustainability at the heart,” according to Andrew Barrie, President of KBR’s Government Solutions EMEA unit.
