On Cadent’s UK Hydrogen Village project, PEL has selected oil and gas and hydrogen engineering company Kent as the FEED contractor for components of hydrogen supply and resilience. Kent is a partner in engineering at HyNet and has participated in more than fifty hydrogen projects globally (NW England).
To provide a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) to deliver hydrogen at the proper specification and availability for Cadent’s projected Hydrogen Village project, Progressive Energy Limited (PEL) has hired Kent.
The main goal of the Hydrogen Village project is to show how household natural gas supply may be replaced with hydrogen utilizing existing local gas lines in order to promote the decarbonization of residential and commercial heating.
In order to meet the UK’s 2050 net zero objectives, home and business CO2 emissions will need to be reduced. Hydrogen demonstration projects, like the one that is being considered for Whitby, Ellesmere Port, are one component of this strategy.
The creation of the FEED design for a hydrogen supply compound that will handle hydrogen before it is injected into a pipeline to feed Whitby Village in Ellesmere Port is part of Kent’s scope of work for this project. The business will also produce FEED designs for supporting utilities and infrastructure, guaranteeing the necessary reliability of the Hydrogen supply to Whitby, and will offer enough buffer storage of Hydrogen to fulfill intraday design peak requirements and comply with all safety laws.
The excellent work we have been doing on hydrogen projects in the UK is demonstrated by this victory. We have enjoyed working with PEL throughout the years on HyNet and look forward to maintaining that connection. It is an important initiative that, if it moves on to the next phase, will show how the rest of the UK may reduce the carbon footprint of cooking and heating in households, according to Matt Wills, Kent’s Market Director for Low Carbon and Onshore Projects.
The UK government announced in November 2020 that it would sponsor a “Village Trial” of 100% hydrogen for use in home heating that would start in 2025 in its Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution. Cadent holds the overall contract for the Village.
