The last of the three pre-assembled wind turbine platforms that make up EDP Renewables WindFloat Atlantic project has left the Port of Ferrol, heading to its final destination 20 kilometers off Portugal’s coast at Viana do Castelo, on a journey that will take three days.
Connecting this last unit to the pre-laid mooring system and connecting it to the rest of the offshore wind farm will complete this operation. This third platform will be installed next to the other two units that are already in operation and supplying energy to the Portuguese grid.
The floating structure – measuring 30 meters high and with a gap of 50 m between each of its columns – can accommodate the commercially available wind turbines with output capacity of 8.4 MW each, on a floating structure.
Once all three platforms that make up the wind farm are installed, they will be able to generate enough energy with their 25 MW of production capacity to supply the equivalent of 60.000 users annually.
WindFloat Atlantic could save almost 1.1 million tons of CO2.
