Italian engineering firm MAIRE, through its subsidiary KT – Kinetics Technology, has clinched an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract from Eni to construct a hydrogen production plant at Eni’s Livorno refinery.

The contract, valued at €123 million, underscores MAIRE’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions and marks a crucial step in Eni’s efforts to transition towards a low-carbon future.

The primary objective of the project is to develop a hydrogen production facility capable of processing natural gas and biogenic feedstocks to produce hydrogen for the synthesis of biofuels. By leveraging renewable feedstocks such as waste cooking oils, animal fats, and residues from the agribusiness industry, the plant aims to produce biofuels for mobility, thereby reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation solutions. Additionally, the plant’s design allows for the future integration of a residual CO2 capture unit, further enhancing its environmental sustainability.

KT – Kinetics Technology will spearhead the design and construction of the hydrogen production plant, leveraging its expertise in integrated engineering and innovative technologies. The plant will utilize advanced processes to efficiently convert natural gas and biogenic feedstocks into high-quality hydrogen, ensuring optimal performance and minimal environmental impact. Moreover, the incorporation of biofuel production capabilities aligns with the growing demand for renewable transportation fuels and underscores Eni’s commitment to driving the energy transition.

The construction of the hydrogen production plant at Eni’s Livorno refinery represents a significant step towards realizing Eni’s vision of transforming its facility into a biorefinery.
