Norwegian shipping company Torghatten Nord has enlisted MAN Cryo, a subsidiary of German equipment provider MAN Energy Solutions (MAN ES), to collaborate on designing and engineering two new hydrogen-powered ferries.

MAN Cryo will be responsible for the detailed design of the bunkering systems, hydrogen piping, and vent masts for the new vessels. Additionally, they will act as the system integrator for the hydrogen process plant, coordinating efforts with other major suppliers involved in the project. This extensive role highlights MAN Cryo’s capacity for seamless integration and advanced engineering solutions.

The two new hydrogen-powered vessels will serve the Bodø – Værøy – Røst – Moskenes ferry route in northern Norway. Designed by The Norwegian Ship Design Company, these vessels are expected to revolutionize ferry transportation by achieving zero-emission operation. The hulls will be constructed by Cemre shipyard in Türkiye and then towed to Myklebust Werft shipyard in Norway for outfitting.

Torghatten Nord’s venture into hydrogen-powered ferries marks a critical step towards sustainable maritime operations. As the company integrates green hydrogen technology, it sets a precedent for the future of eco-friendly transportation in the maritime industry.
