Finnish energy company Helen Oy has partnered with MAN Energy Solutions and H-Tec Systems to create a 3-megawatt green hydrogen production plant in the Helsinki region.

This plant will be near the district heating network and the Vuosaari Harbour. The project aims to boost Helen Oy’s expertise in large-scale hydrogen production and improve the flexibility of its energy system. MAN Energy Solutions will be responsible for the hydrogen-focused aspects of the project, providing the necessary equipment and overseeing installation and commissioning.

Unique 3H2 Project

Sari Mannonen, Helen Oy’s Senior Vice President of New Business & Hydrogen, highlighted the unique nature of the 3H2 project, which integrates electricity, heating, transportation, and hydrogen production. The project aims to establish flexibility between these sectors, and the collaboration with MAN Energy Solutions is expected to harness world-class industry expertise.

Central Role of H-Tec Systems

H-Tec Systems will provide three ME450 PEM electrolysers, vital components for the plant. These electrolysers will produce up to 1,350 kilograms of green hydrogen daily using Helen’s renewable energy sources. The hydrogen will be transported via pipeline to a nearby refueling station and distributed to industrial customers or other refueling stations. Waste heat from the hydrogen production process will be incorporated into Helen’s district heating network.

Future Importance of Green Hydrogen

Alexander Stöckler from MAN Energy Solutions emphasized the importance of green hydrogen for a climate-neutral future. He noted the significance of industrial-scale hydrogen plants in reducing costs and meeting future hydrogen demands. He highlighted the need for energy suppliers like Helen Oy to gain experience with hydrogen tech to make significant strides toward economic and efficient hydrogen production.

PEM Electrolysis Advantages

PEM electrolysis technology from H-Tec Systems will be used at the plant’s core. PEM electrolysis splits water into hydrogen and oxygen using an electric current and is ideal for coupling with renewable energy sources like wind and solar. It requires less electricity, uses no aggressive chemicals, and generates high-purity hydrogen suitable for immediate use.

Collaboration for a Climate-Neutral Future

Robin von Plettenberg, CEO of H-Tec Systems, expressed satisfaction with collaborating with MAN Energy Solutions and trust from Helen Oy. This collaboration focuses on establishing a climate-neutral energy supply for Scandinavian countries and Finland. The green hydrogen produced will play a crucial role in the region’s sustainable energy infrastructure.
