McPhy Energy has inaugurated what is hailed as France’s ‘first’ large-capacity, low-carbon hydrogen refueling station.

Nestled in the picturesque region of Vendée, this station represents not only a significant leap in the country’s commitment to sustainable transportation but also a strategic move towards the European Union’s ambitious goal of installing a hydrogen station every 200 kilometers by 2030.

The latest addition to France’s hydrogen infrastructure comes as a result of McPhy’s collaboration with Brétéché, a company poised to operate and manage the station. What sets this refueling station apart is its dual-pressure design, capable of handling both 350 and 700 bar vehicles. It boasts an impressive distribution capacity, with the capability to provide up to one tonne of hydrogen per day. At its core lies a state-of-the-art compressor block that ensures efficient hydrogen compression, vital for rapid refueling.

McPhy’s involvement in this pioneering project extends beyond the construction of the station; it marks a significant stride in Brétéché’s decarbonization journey. Hydrogen, often lauded as the clean energy carrier of the future, plays a pivotal role in reducing carbon emissions across various industries, particularly in transportation.

Eric Hidier, President of Brétéché, expressed his satisfaction with the partnership, highlighting McPhy’s compelling proposal of technology suitable for diverse mobility needs. He emphasized the project’s broader impact, stating, “We’re delighted with this first collaboration, which enables us to invest in the development of the mobility market and the structuring of the French hydrogen industry.”

Jean-Baptise Lucas, CEO of McPhy, placed the Vendée station in the context of a more expansive vision. He affirmed that this station represents the first step toward the European Union’s ambitious target of a hydrogen station every 200 kilometers by 2030. Such a network is pivotal for the widespread adoption of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector.

In a separate endeavor, McPhy is set to equip the Dyneff Toulouse Sud-Sud (A61) highway refueling station with hydrogen distribution technology. Anticipated to offer a distribution capacity of up to 60 kilograms per day, this station is tailored to serve trucks and light vehicles. It is slated to become the ‘first’ hydrogen station installed along a French highway, opening up new possibilities for long-distance hydrogen-powered travel in the Occitanie region.

As France takes this momentous leap in embracing hydrogen as a sustainable energy source for transportation, it not only strengthens its position in the burgeoning hydrogen mobility sector but also aligns itself with the global drive towards decarbonization.
