Mitsubishi Power, a powerful brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI), has signed a full turnkey contract with leading Egyptian oil and gas company Alexandria National Refining & Petrochemicals Company (ANRPC) to provide advanced hydrogen fuel conversion technology solutions that will help the company meet its decarbonization goals. The system will be implemented at the ARNPC refinery complex in Alexandria, which supplies 30 percent of Egypt’s domestic gasoline supply.

Mitsubishi Power will be responsible for the design, engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of fuel conversion solutions for the current 100-ton/hour boiler by the end of 2023, allowing it to fire up to 100 percent hydrogen. To guarantee effective and safe operations, state-of-the-art hydrogen burner technology and modern control solutions will be installed.

“We are happy to cooperate with world technology leader Mitsubishi Power on new fuel conversion technologies that will help us accomplish our commercial goals while decreasing our carbon footprint by 22,000 tons yearly,” Salah Gaber, Chairman & CEO of ANRPC, said of the arrangement. Modernizing existing conventional boilers by permitting fuel conversion is a feasible and critical step toward achieving Egypt’s lofty energy efficiency and decarbonization targets set forth in the national Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy. We look forward to collaborating with Mitsubishi Power to meet all project milestones and complete the project on time.”

“We are happy to work with Egypt’s premier O&G refinery ANRPC, providing them with our breakthrough hydrogen fuel conversion technology solutions, which will help ANRPC to cut its CO2 emissions,” stated Falk Hoffmeister, Head of Service at Mitsubishi Power Europe GmbH. The inclusion of hydrogen, often regarded as the fuel of the future, in ANRPC’s fuel mix will provide the flexibility they require to achieve cost savings. This recent deal is part of Mitsubishi Power’s ongoing commitment to developing technologies that convert current thermal power systems to hydrogen, enabling our clients in the area to meet their carbon reduction targets.”

“The ANRPC hydrogen fuel conversion project is a landmark project for Egypt’s energy industry, and we are honored to partner with O&G leader ANRPC to help them fulfill the country’s ambition to become a low carbon energy leader,” said Khalid Salem, President, Mitsubishi Power Middle East, and North Africa. The ANRPC project is particularly essential in the run-up to COP27 since it demonstrates Egypt’s commitment to the establishment of a national hydrogen sector. We at Mitsubishi Power will continue to collaborate with our partners in Egypt and the Middle East and North Africa to assist them to achieve decarbonization and ensure the region’s long-term sustainability.”

ANRPC, which was founded in 1999 and is part of the Egyptian general petroleum corporation, is Egypt’s main refining firm (EGPC).

Mitsubishi Power’s hydrogen firing technology allows owners of thermal power plants to decarbonize their units with little changes. This is part of Mitsubishi Power’s commitment to collaborating with customers to develop a long-term strategy for lowering CO2 emissions.
