Mitsubishi Power, the power solutions arm of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), took center stage at COP28 in Dubai, affirming its commitment to propel the development of the global hydrogen ecosystem.

As over 30 countries united in the COP28 Declaration of Intent on Hydrogen, Mitsubishi Power showcased its pioneering strides in clean technology and the pivotal role hydrogen plays in the urgent mission to decarbonize energy systems.

The COP28 Declaration of Intent on Hydrogen, unveiled last week, stands as a collaborative effort by more than 30 nations to expedite the global commercialization of hydrogen. Recognizing hydrogen’s significance in achieving the decarbonization of energy systems, this commitment aligns with Mitsubishi Power’s vision to spearhead the transition to sustainable energy.

Mitsubishi Power’s dedication to clean technology materialized in the completion of the world’s first 30% hydrogen blend power generation validation. This groundbreaking achievement involved a state-of-the-art 1,650℃ class J-series Air-Cooled (JAC) gas turbine, showcasing the company’s commitment to harnessing hydrogen produced and stored on-site for power generation.

Dr. Javier Cavada, President and CEO of Europe, Middle East, and Africa at Mitsubishi Power, emphasized hydrogen’s role in future-proofing global energy systems. Speaking at Climate Action’s Hydrogen Transition Summit, Cavada highlighted the pressing need for decarbonization and stressed the urgency of pragmatic solutions. “It’s time to act and find pragmatic solutions that will allow us to drive a fair and just energy transition,” he asserted.

Cavada expressed optimism about the Middle East and North Africa evolving into the world’s clean energy hub. The region is witnessing a surge in hydrogen-related investments, aligning with the global momentum to accelerate the adoption of clean energy technologies.

According to the Global Hydrogen Council, hydrogen has the potential to mitigate 60-80 gigatons of CO2 by 2050, emphasizing the need for rapid acceleration in hydrogen-related initiatives.

Mitsubishi Power is not only making strides in technology development but also translating its vision into reality. The company is actively involved in deploying an industry and utility-scale integrated commercial hydrogen facility in Utah, USA. This transformative project is a result of a strategic partnership with Chevron U.S.A. Inc’s New Energies Company, formerly known as Magnum Development, on the Advanced Clean Energy Storage (ACES Delta) Hydrogen Hub.
