Monfalcone coal plant to transform to green hydrogen

The coal-fired plant in Monfalcone will transform into a combined cycle energy transition facility using green hydrogen. It is stipulated in a contract between the Regional Council and A2A Energiefuture.

The provision, which is the outcome of dialogue with the Municipality of Monfalcone, has ramifications for environmental restoration and the redevelopment of the area.

The immediate request for the coal-fired plant to be shut down and the execution of the necessary demolition, dismantling, and reclamation works to free up the structures that are no longer usable, with the elimination of the bunker and related systems, including the chimney, form the foundation of the intervention plan reached by the Region and A2A.

A2A Energiefuture will give full assistance for a reclamation and reclamation activity that will cost 60 million euros, be carried out in stages, and be finished in 54 months. Accepting the findings from the Municipality’s consultation, the Region has also acquired from the conversation with A2A a significant urban regeneration plan for the reclaimed land for close to 20 million euros.

A new maritime station will be built for mooring services, complete with structures for pleasure boating and a promenade for tourists on bikes and pedestrians along the quay of the Valentinis canal. Then, a technological hub will be developed for conducting educational and training activities, with a focus on courses on maritime economics and at the service of start-ups in the industry. Infrastructure will also be established to support the future lodging facility, public buildings, and maritime station. The new buildings will in fact have photovoltaic and geothermal energy systems installed. Furthermore,

The facility is in line with the international “North Adriatic Hydrogen Valley” project that was put forth and backed by the coalition of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Slovenia, and Croatia and was positively assessed at a technical level by the EU Commission in the context of the Horizon Europe tender, which calls for the creation of pilot projects for the production of more than 5,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually from renewable sources.
