Morocco is emerging as a global powerhouse in the realm of green hydrogen, poised to revolutionize the clean energy landscape. According to Antoine Sallé de Chou, an official from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Morocco possesses one of the world’s most remarkable potentials for green hydrogen production.

The EBRD conducted an extensive study encompassing its 37 operational countries, affirming Morocco’s extraordinary capacity to produce hydrogen at highly competitive prices. What sets Morocco apart is its unique combination of abundant wind and solar resources. While various countries possess remarkable solar or wind energy potential, Morocco boasts a harmonious blend of both, leading to impressive capacity factors of nearly 70% for electrolyzers. This positions Morocco as a formidable contender in the race to develop a green hydrogen economy.

Proximity to the European market is another pivotal advantage that Morocco brings to the table. Europe, in alignment with its ambitious policies, aspires to produce and import a substantial 10 million tons of green hydrogen. A significant portion of this green hydrogen is expected to be sourced from North Africa, making Morocco a strategic partner due to its geographic proximity.

Moroccan companies have demonstrated their commitment to expanding their presence in Africa. With an intimate understanding of African markets, driven by the extensive reach of Moroccan conglomerates across the continent, the nation is well-equipped to navigate the complexities of the African business landscape. As a platform and gateway to the African continent, Morocco plays a pivotal role in facilitating business interactions and collaborations across the region.

Morocco’s ascent as a green hydrogen leader not only positions the nation as a sustainable energy pioneer but also underscores the broader shift towards renewable energy solutions globally. As the world grapples with climate change and the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions, Morocco’s green hydrogen potential is a beacon of hope in the quest for cleaner, more sustainable energy sources.
