Lotte Chemical, POSCO, and SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation, inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Samsung Engineering to build green hydrogen and ammonia project (SEDC).

Bintulu will host the Sarawak H2biscus Green Hydrogen/Ammonia Project (H2biscus).

Samsung Engineering’s head of solution business division Park Cheonhong, ESG Management Head of Lotte Chemical head of ESG management Kim Yeon-seop, POSCO’s head of hydrogen business office Jo Joo-ik, and SEDC chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Abdul Aziz Dato Husain all attended the virtual signing ceremony.

The H2biscus project seeks to convert hydropower and natural gas into green hydrogen/methanol and blue hydrogen, as well as hydrogen to ammonia, with the primary goal of providing hydrogen and ammonia to Korea and Sarawak.

The project is anticipated to generate 7,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year for Sarawak’s local usage, 600,000 tonnes of blue ammonia, 630,000 tonnes of green ammonia, and 460,000 tonnes of green methanol per year, according to the conclusions of the pre-feasibility study done in 2021.

Samsung Engineering, Lotte Chemical, POSCO, and SEDC Energy will all be involved in the project’s development from start to finish, including direct investment, building, transportation, and use.

By the end of this month, the feasibility study will have been confirmed by an in-depth technical, legal, financial, tax, and market research. The EPC work for the H2biscus Project will begin when the Feasibility Study, Pre-FEED, and FEED are finished.

“The H2biscus Project will play a vital role in this New Energy sector, and the breadth and size of the project will establish Sarawak as a participant in the global market as well,” SEDC Energy said in a statement yesterday.

“Our collaborations with Samsung Engineering, POSCO, and Lotte Chemical will help us make this a reality, which we respect and appreciate.” We hope that the economic relationship between Sarawak, Malaysia, and the Korean government will continue to grow and strengthen, and that it will be in line with global net-zero carbon emission goals.”

“The H2biscus Project gives the possibility to generate a wide range of eco-friendly goods, such as green hydrogen, green and blue ammonia, green methanol, and CCU,” stated Sungan Choi, president and chief executive officer of Samsung Engineering.

“The project will serve as a worldwide model for renewable energy trade and hydrogen transportation between Korea and Malaysia, creating hydrogen-related norms for the two nations,” says the statement.

Samsung Engineering is also working on a methanol plant project in Bintulu for Sarawak Petchem, which is planned to generate 5,000 tonnes of methanol per day.
