Tyrolean food retailer MPreis has taken a significant step in decarbonizing its operations by commissioning its own electrolysis plant.
Since March 2022, this innovative facility has been producing green hydrogen, setting the stage for a holistic approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions across various sectors.
MPreis, recognized for its commitment to environmental responsibility, utilizes green hydrogen from its electrolysis plant within its own operations. The Therese Mölk bakery, affiliated with MPreis, and the first hydrogen-powered truck in Austria benefit from this eco-friendly initiative. Since March 2023, the hydrogen-powered truck has been supplying supermarkets, contributing to a significant reduction of approximately 65,000 kilograms of CO2 emissions annually.
The influence of green hydrogen extends beyond Tyrol, reaching the heart of Austria, Vienna. Heavy-duty vehicles in the Austrian capital now refuel with green hydrogen at Wien Energie’s hydrogen filling stations. Wien Energie, an Austrian energy supplier, has been actively involved in green hydrogen trials, including the addition of hydrogen to the gas turbine of its combined heat and power plant. Michael Strebl, Chairman of the Wien Energie Management Board, reveals future plans: “From 2024, we will produce green hydrogen ourselves and put our own electrolysis plant in Vienna into operation.”
MPreis further strengthens its commitment to green hydrogen through a multi-year hydrogen procurement agreement with Tyczka Hydrogen. This partnership extends the use of hydrogen in mobility, including fueling fuel cell buses. The collaboration also played a crucial role in the Siemens Mireo Plus H regional train’s test drive in the Allgäu region in September 2023.
