Nexans has secured a major contract by SSE Renewables to design, manufacture and install the high voltage (HV) onshore and offshore export cables for the phase 1 development of the Seagreen offshore wind farm project. 

Construction will start next year on the 1,075 megawatt (MW) project, which is located 27 kilometers off Angus coast.

Once completed in 2022/23, Seagreen 1 will be the largest wind farm in Scotland and the single largest source of renewable energy, contributing significantly to Scotland’s net zero ambition and providing enough clean, renewable energy to power 1 million homes.

Three 65 kilometers offshore export cables will be supplied by Nexans’ factory in Charleston, US.

The project’s three 20 kilometers onshore export cables will be produced at Nexans’ factory in Charleroi, Belgium.

The Aurora, the brand new cable laying vessel (CLV) from Nexans, will mount the export cables for the Seagreen offshore wind farm project. The Aurora is currently under construction and will be delivered in the second quarter of 2021.

The electricity generated by the Seagreen turbines is transmitted to landfall at Carnoustie through the subsea export cables. When ashore, the land cables will relay electricity to a new Tealing substation where it will feed into the UK’s national transmission grid for electricity.
