Nikola Corp. and Voltera have announced a partnership to create up to 50 HYLA-branded hydrogen fueling stations across North America over the next five years. This collaboration aims to develop an open network of commercial hydrogen refuelling stations that will support the deployment of zero-emission fuel cell electric trucks.

Nikola Energy President Carey Mendes stated that the partnership with Voltera will bring substantial capital and expertise to support Nikola’s plans to build refuelling infrastructure to support its customers. He further added that Voltera’s expertise in building zero-emission infrastructure will enable Nikola’s first-to-market hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks and fueling infrastructure. The shared commitment of Nikola and Voltera to rapidly deploy infrastructure is key to enabling the transition to a zero-emission economy.

Under the partnership, Voltera will site, build, own, and operate the strategically located stations, and Nikola will supply the hydrogen fuel and provide technical expertise. The companies claim that this partnership will create the largest North American network of commercial hydrogen refuelling stations, reducing barriers for operators buying vehicles at scale to enable the mass adoption of hydrogen trucks.

Voltera CEO Matt Horton expressed his company’s mission to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission vehicles by developing necessary infrastructure, making the partnership with Nikola a significant step towards expanding their focus beyond battery-electric vehicle charging. By dramatically increasing hydrogen fueling infrastructure, this partnership aims to support the mass adoption of hydrogen trucks.
