Numaligarh Refinery Ltd (NRL) is embarking on a transformative journey towards sustainability by incorporating green hydrogen production into its operations, with a bold vision to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030.
By mid-2025, the company plans to deploy hydrogen electrolysers, aiming to initiate the production of green hydrogen.
Bhaskar Jyoti Phukan, Managing Director of NRL, shared insights on the project, revealing plans to commence green hydrogen production at a capacity of 2.4 KTPA initially, with a targeted increase to 20 KTPA by 2030. This initiative forms a crucial part of NRL’s overarching strategy to curtail its carbon footprint and contribute to the global energy transition.
With a current crude oil processing capacity of 3 million tonne, NRL underscores the project’s significance amid the refinery’s expansion. As the refinery’s hydrogen demand is projected to surge from 148 KTPA to 238 KTPA, the adoption of green hydrogen emerges as a strategic imperative to meet this escalating need efficiently.
While NRL did not ink new Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) during the India Energy Week (IEW), it recently forged a partnership with NTPC to construct a second bio-refinery in Bongaigaon. This collaboration stems from the company’s pioneering venture in bamboo-to-ethanol conversion at its Numaligarh bio-refinery, a groundbreaking initiative globally.
