NTPC Green Energy is spearheading a significant initiative to establish India’s largest green hydrogen hub in Pudimadaka, Andhra Pradesh. The facility is slated to begin operations within three years.
The hub spans 1,200 acres, with half dedicated to constructing an advanced green hydrogen production plant. This plant will have the capacity to produce 1,100 tonnes of green hydrogen daily, which translates to about half a million tonnes annually.
Besides green hydrogen, the hub will also focus on producing derivatives such as green ammonia, green methanol, and sustainable aviation fuel. NTPC Green Energy’s CEO Rajiv Gupta highlighted their commitment to serving both domestic needs and export demands, particularly to the European Union and Southeast Asia.
The remaining 600 acres are earmarked for industrial growth. Approximately 300 acres will be allocated for plug-and-play facilities designed for manufacturing electrolysers, solar PV modules, battery energy storage systems, and fuel cells. Additionally, 200 acres will be set aside for essential infrastructure, including effluent and sewage treatment plants.
While the initial facilities are expected to be ready in three years, full-scale green hydrogen production might take five to six years. Gupta pointed out that establishing a green hydrogen ecosystem demands considerable time and financial resources.
