Dr. Ayesha Verrall, Minister of Research, Science, and Innovation, explains that a research initiative on green hydrogen has been formed with Germany to promote New Zealand’s transition to a more sustainable, low-emissions economy.
Under the New Zealand-Germany Green Hydrogen research initiative, the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment (MBIE) and the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will invest together in extensive green hydrogen research.
“Green hydrogen might play a significant role in the clean energy mix required for a sustainable future.” Each of the three initiatives will get $2 million over the course of three years.
Through close cooperation in the development of innovative green hydrogen technologies and processes, the alliance will give research possibilities for both nations.
“Green hydrogen might play a significant role in the clean energy mix required for a sustainable future.
It might help us meet our target of 100 percent renewable power by 2030 and move to a green, carbon-neutral economy by 2050.
In the interim, a comparable German fund will give support for German research initiatives on green hydrogen.
“Germany is a key research partner for New Zealand in several sectors and a world leader in green hydrogen research. The research program will provide possibilities for international cooperation that will enhance the quality and impact of our research through worldwide links.
“Working with German partners with world-leading knowledge in their area and having access to cutting-edge European research facilities and equipment are among the opportunities that the project offers to New Zealand research teams,” explains Dr. Verrall.
