With the signing of an MOU, Octopus Hydrogen and BayWa r.e. plan to work together on green hydrogen production facilities at renewable project sites throughout the UK.
Octopus Hydrogen will install electrolysers, compression, and mobile hydrogen storage at selected BayWa r.e. solar and wind projects as part of the strategic partnership.
BayWa r.e. project pipeline in the UK has identified initial projects that have the potential to produce up to 6,500kg/day of green hydrogen, with first deliveries anticipated next year. Providing a complete end-to-end hydrogen supply solution as well as aiding in the decarbonization of local industries such as commercial transportation, Octopus Hydrogen will produce green hydrogen that will be stored and then distributed to customer sites.
Octopus Hydrogen has developed new software that will optimize the use of electrolyzers, thereby balancing the grid and increasing efficiency. As the UK’s dependence on imported fossil gas continues to worsen, this optimization of renewable generation is a catalyst for new renewable capacity.
Renewable energy generated on site will power the hydrogen production facilities. The low electricity costs of the electrolyser make this concept attractive for green hydrogen production costs, as electricity is a major factor. The electrolyzer will use about 30-40 percent of the renewable energy generated, and the rest will be fed into the grid. A reduction in renewable energy output due to grid congestion could be avoided if hydrogen is produced on-site.
