Oman and Belgium have signed an agreement to boost cooperation in the field of green hydrogen.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s visit to Belgium, and it marks a significant step in advancing the global hydrogen economy.
The MoU, signed between Hydrogen Oman (Hydrom) and the Belgian Hydrogen Council (BHC), aims to enhance collaboration across the hydrogen value chain. Both nations are committed to promoting knowledge exchange, technological advancements, and exploring opportunities in hydrogen production, infrastructure, transportation, and utilization. This partnership reflects the shared ambition of Oman and Belgium to shape the future of clean energy.
Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Oman’s Minister of Energy and Minerals, highlighted Oman’s potential as a hub for green hydrogen production. Combined with Belgium’s strategic position as a hydrogen-based industrial hub and connection point to European markets, this partnership aims to establish a seamless hydrogen supply chain. Together, the countries seek to accelerate the transition to clean energy and build the necessary infrastructure for a global hydrogen economy.
Building on 46 years of bilateral relations, the MoU expands on previous collaborations in the green energy sector. This includes the 2023 Project Development Agreement between Hydrom and the Hyport Duqm project, a joint venture between Oman’s OQ Alternative Energy and Belgium’s DEME to produce and export green hydrogen. A declaration of intent was also made in 2023 to advance hydrogen certification and trade frameworks between the two nations.
The MoU focuses on knowledge sharing, technology development, and infrastructure planning for hydrogen production and transportation. It also aims to address legislative challenges and expand cooperation with other European countries.
