ORLEN and Yokogawa Europe have announced a partnership to develop technology for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This partnership marks a major milestone in the pursuit of carbon neutrality in the aviation industry.

SAF is a synthetic fuel that is produced from renewable sources, such as green hydrogen and carbon dioxide captured from industrial processes. SAF can be used in existing aircraft engines without any modifications, and it offers a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional petroleum-based jet fuel.

ORLEN is a Polish oil and gas company that is investing heavily in renewable energy and sustainable fuels. The company aims to produce 70 thousand tonnes of SAF annually by the end of 2030. Yokogawa is a Japanese industrial automation company with a proven track record in developing and implementing innovative technologies for the energy and petrochemical sectors.

Under the terms of the partnership, ORLEN and Yokogawa will develop an integrated management solution for the production of SAF. This solution will include a virtual replica of a production facility, known as a digital twin. The digital twin will enable the simulation and fine-tuning of production processes with a focus on selecting the most economically viable and environmentally sustainable synthesis method.

The partnership between ORLEN and Yokogawa is a significant step forward in the development of SAF technology. The two companies have the experience and expertise to develop and commercialize a viable SAF production process.
