Pertamina, Indonesia’s state-owned energy giant, and Hyundai Motor Asia Pacific HQ have formed a strategic alliance to establish a robust hydrogen ecosystem in Indonesia.

This collaboration is part of a broader effort to accelerate the country’s energy transition and align with the Indonesian government’s objective of achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060.

Salyadi Dariah Saputra, Director of Strategy, Portfolio, and Business Development at Pertamina, emphasized that this partnership underscores Pertamina’s dedication to expediate the energy transition. “Green hydrogen is gaining global traction and could represent a significant growth area for Pertamina’s future operations,” Salyadi said.

Pertamina has earmarked 17 potential hydrogen production sites, stretching from Sumatra to Papua. A flagship green hydrogen project is already underway at the Ulubelu geothermal site in Tanggamus Regency, Lampung province, targeting a production capacity of 100 kg per day.

In addition to hydrogen production, Pertamina is spearheading the construction of Indonesia’s first integrated energy refueling station in Daan Mogot, West Jakarta. This pilot project will include a Hydrogen Fuel Filling Station that will also offer fuel oil and natural gas, bringing multiple energy options to a single location.

The development of hydrogen infrastructure necessitates significant investment and supportive government policies. Pertamina and Hyundai signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on May 30, 2024, marks an important milestone in their cooperative efforts to create a sustainable hydrogen ecosystem, particularly within the transportation sector.
