Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) and Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Incorporated (TEPCO) have forged a collaborative agreement on low-carbon hydrogen and low-carbon ammonia.

Dannif Danusaputro, CEO of Pertamina NRE, emphasized the strategic nature of this collaboration, detailing plans for the construction of a green hydrogen production facility. The chosen location is the Lahendong Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) in North Sulawesi, owned by PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGEO). The primary goal is to harness Indonesia’s abundant geothermal resources to enable cost-efficient and environmentally beneficial production of hydrogen and ammonia.

Chikara Kojima, Executive Vice President of TEPCO, highlighted the company’s rich experience in hydrogen production, dating back to 2016 in Yamanashi Prefecture. With a strong emphasis on cutting-edge technological expertise, TEPCO aims to contribute to Indonesia’s decarbonization initiative. The collaboration seeks to integrate TEPCO’s advanced technology with Pertamina NRE’s position as a leading green energy company in Southeast Asia.

The collaboration between Pertamina NRE and TEPCO signifies a significant step towards achieving decarbonization goals in Indonesia. By tapping into the country’s geothermal potential, the project aims to produce green hydrogen and ammonia, essential elements in the transition to clean energy. The Lahendong Geothermal Power Plant emerges as a strategic hub, symbolizing the nation’s commitment to sustainable practices.

The inaugural project, scheduled for implementation in 2024, marks the beginning of a transformative journey. Lahendong Geothermal Power Plant is poised to become a key player in Indonesia’s hydrogen landscape, offering a model for other regions with abundant geothermal resources. The collaboration’s success is expected to pave the way for future projects, contributing to Indonesia’s position as a leader in green hydrogen and ammonia production.
