Brazilian state-owned energy giant Petrobras has announced a substantial investment of $3.9 million (BRL 20 million) into a study on natural hydrogen.

This initiative aims to explore the generation processes and feasibility of extracting natural hydrogen within the country. The research, which commenced in October 2023 in Bahia, is part of Petrobras’ broader commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions.

Petrobras highlights natural hydrogen as a potential renewable energy source with minimal greenhouse gas emissions during production. This recognition underscores the significance of exploring alternative energy avenues to achieve sustainability goals. The study’s focus on natural hydrogen aligns with global efforts to diversify energy sources and reduce carbon footprints.

Since 2022, Petrobras has intensified its efforts in natural hydrogen research, including staff training and collaboration with researchers. The company’s commitment to innovation was evident in its hosting of the inaugural Natural Hydrogen Workshop last March, convening experts from Brazil and abroad. Strategic partnerships with universities and industry stakeholders further underscore Petrobras’ dedication to exploring and harnessing natural hydrogen resources.

Carlos José do Nascimento Travassos, Petrobras’ director of engineering, technology, and innovation, emphasized the significance of hydrogen as a promising avenue for decarbonization. Petrobras’ strategic planning includes comprehensive studies on the hydrogen value chain, strategic partnerships, and research and development activities. Travassos’ remarks underscore Petrobras’ proactive approach to analyzing and leveraging Brazil’s natural hydrogen potential.

Petrobras’ investments in research and development for the low-carbon economy are set to reach $0.7 billion by 2028, reflecting a substantial commitment to sustainable energy solutions. This investment trajectory, rising from 15% of total research and development investments in 2024 to 30% by 2028, demonstrates Petrobras’ evolving focus on renewable energy initiatives. The company’s strategic shift towards low-carbon technologies underscores its role as a key player in Brazil’s energy transition.
