Petronas Hydrogen Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Bhd, has inked an agreement with Samsung C&T Corp to create a clean hydrogen supply chain in South Korea.

Petronas and Samsung C&T will investigate the possibility of supplying blue or green hydrogen to South Korea. Petronas will also provide consulting services to help build strong and viable industry standards.

Petronas’ foray into the hydrogen sector, according to CEO Adlan Ahmad, is a natural next step in the company’s energy cooperation with Samsung C&T, which has been a long-time partner in the LNG and ammonia sectors.

According to a statement, the cooperation supports the Petronas group’s broader goal of attaining net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, which includes expansion in non-conventional energy sources like renewables and hydrogen.

Petronas has stated that, in addition to its main portfolio, it will establish a new, autonomous organization focusing on greener energy solutions to seize possibilities in the energy transition sector. Renewables, hydrogen, and green mobility are the three initial key offers that will give clients reduced carbon alternatives.

Meanwhile, Samsung C&T, a worldwide trade, and investment firm is looking for possibilities in the hydrogen industry, including the construction and operation of hydrogen-related infrastructure.
