South Africa’s pursuit of sustainable energy solutions takes a major step forward with Phelan Green Energy’s ambitious plan to invest ZAR 47 billion (approximately USD 2.5 billion or EUR 2.37 billion) in a groundbreaking green hydrogen and ammonia production plant in the Western Cape province. This endeavor, known as the Saldanha Green Hydrogen Project, represents a significant stride towards green energy and economic growth in the region.

Phelan Green Energy, an independent solar power producer, is leading the charge in developing green energy solutions that can not only transform South Africa’s energy landscape but also contribute to the global shift towards sustainable practices. The subsidiary Solar Capital will play a pivotal role in overseeing the installation of the green hydrogen and ammonia production facility, which is expected to deliver annual revenues exceeding ZAR 6 billion from green fuel exports.

The Saldanha Green Hydrogen Project holds the promise of producing green hydrogen and ammonia for both local use and international export. Green hydrogen, produced through environmentally friendly methods, has gained recognition as a vital component in the transition to clean energy. Ammonia, often used as a carrier for hydrogen, is a versatile chemical with applications in fertilizers, industrial processes, and energy storage.

Construction and planning for the production complex are currently in progress, with the goal of commencing initial exports in early 2026. The project’s success is contingent on a series of milestones, with planning activities set for completion by the third quarter of 2024. Following this crucial phase, Phelan Green Energy will make an investment decision that can reshape the energy landscape in South Africa and beyond.

One of the immediate impacts of the Saldanha Green Hydrogen Project is job creation. During the construction phase, the project is projected to generate 2,500 jobs, providing employment opportunities in the region. Additionally, over 500 permanent positions are expected to become available throughout the plant’s operational life. This job creation not only bolsters the local economy but also aligns with the global commitment to sustainable employment in the green energy sector.

Paschal Phelan, chairman of Phelan Green, expressed the significance of the Saldanha Green Hydrogen Project, calling it a testament to the company’s dedication to shaping South Africa’s energy future. The project reflects a commitment to introducing sustainable innovations to the global market, signaling South Africa’s readiness to embrace clean and renewable energy solutions.
