Plug Power Inc. has gained the first international safety and performance certification in Korea for electrolyzer production, opening up the commercial sale of its systems in the Korean market.

The milestone was reached through their joint venture with SK E&S, SK Plug HyVerse, targeted at advancing the Asian hydrogen sector.

Plug Power’s EX425D, a 1 MW PEM electrolyzer that produces up to 425 kg of green hydrogen per day, met the Korean Gas Safety (KGS) Corporation Standard AH271 for Water Electrolysis Hydrogen Generator production. This certification granted approval to Plug Power’s Rochester Gigafactory for electrolyzer stack production, and to partner Alpha ECC’s Vietnam-based manufacturing facility for system production and assembly.

Plug Power’s CEO, Andy Marsh, expressed satisfaction at this achievement, stating it augments their support for Korea’s decarbonization goals. He emphasized their unique position as the first company to receive such certification and their five decades of operational expertise in PEM stack technology.

With Plug Power achieving this strategic milestone, the joint venture, SK Plug HyVerse, will support hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks via a project on Jeju Island, Korea. They are also gearing up to construct over 25 hydrogen fueling stations across South Korea. Leveraging Plug’s ProGen module, a hydrogen-powered bus has also been developed, set for mass production by the end of the year.
