In a move reflecting the mounting logistical and supply chain headwinds facing hydrogen infrastructure projects across Europe, Polenergia S.A. has officially announced the discontinuation of its H2 HUB Nowa Sarzyna: Green Hydrogen Storage initiative.
The decision, formalized on 7 April 2025, comes despite the project having secured public funding through Poland’s National Center for Research and Development (NCBR) under the New Technologies for Energy I programme.
Originally launched in September 2022, the project was a collaborative effort led by Polenergia alongside its subsidiary Polenergia Elektrociepłownia Nowa Sarzyna and Wrocław University of Technology. Designed to explore large-scale green hydrogen storage technologies, the H2 HUB Nowa Sarzyna aimed to position itself as a key enabler of Poland’s emerging hydrogen economy.
At the time of termination, the project was in the second of three scheduled phases, with this middle phase due for completion by 31 October 2025. However, according to the company’s stock exchange disclosure, persistent delays in the delivery of critical technological components — coupled with a tightening supply chain for hydrogen-specific equipment — rendered the completion timeline untenable.
Polenergia’s acknowledgment that “the current prospects for the project’s implementation offer no chance to complete the tasks scheduled in the second phase within the specified timeframe” is emblematic of the operational risk many developers now face as green hydrogen ambitions scale up against constrained industrial readiness.
The company’s move to formally request project termination from the NCBR aligns with legal disclosure requirements under Article 17(1) of EU Regulation No. 596/2014 on market abuse.
