Porsche, the renowned luxury automaker, has taken a significant step in its commitment to environmental sustainability by entering into a partnership with H2 Green Steel (H2GS) to source carbon dioxide-reduced steel for its sportscars.

This move aligns with Porsche’s broader initiative to minimize vehicle manufacturing emissions and achieve a carbon-neutral balance sheet across its value chain by 2030.

Porsche’s collaboration with H2GS revolves around incorporating “near zero-emission” green steel into its sportscar manufacturing process. The goal is to leverage this environmentally friendly material to substantially reduce the carbon footprint associated with the production of its iconic vehicles. By aiming for a carbon-neutral balance sheet, Porsche is positioning itself as a frontrunner in sustainable luxury automotive manufacturing.

H2GS, a Swedish industrial start-up, will supply Porsche with green steel produced using a revolutionary production process. This process relies on hydrogen and electricity generated from renewable energy sources, ensuring that the steel has minimal CO2 emissions. According to H2GS, their green steel results in a remarkable 95% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventionally produced steel using coking coal.

Porsche’s commitment to utilizing green steel is a strategic move to address CO2 emissions across its supply chain. The sportscar manufacturer plans to incorporate up to 35,000 tons of low-emission steel into its vehicle series production. While Porsche is progressively integrating lightweight aluminum into its vehicles, steel remains a vital material due to its mechanical properties, making the reduction of its carbon footprint pivotal.
