Danish renewables developer European Energy A/S has agreed to deliver green hydrogen to Port Esbjerg beginning in the first half of 2023.

The green hydrogen will be created at the wind farm owned by European Energy in Made, close to Esbjerg, and utilized in a fuel cell to provide clean electricity for ships in the port.

According to the developer, the development of a PtX plant in Made, where electrolysis will be primarily powered by two test wind turbines in Esbjerg installed by European Energy, has just received approval from the municipality of Esbjerg.

The district heating network in Esbjerg will get heat from hydrogen generation. Rene Alcaraz Frederiksen, head of project economics and optimization, Power to X, stated that this project “demonstrates sector coupling in practice and will provide us priceless expertise of the day-to-day operations of a PtX-facility.”

According to Dennis Jul Pedersen, chief executive of Port Esbjerg, the number of vessels using the port indicates a rising need for renewable energy. According to the CEO, the mobile green hydrogen fuel cell technology will supplement the port’s onshore power supply infrastructure and may be deployed wherever it is needed.
