With an emphasis on hydrogen and its derivatives, such as ammonia, green methanol, and synthetic fuels, the Portuguese government has presented a set of steps to begin new auction systems for offshore wind and renewable gas. According to the paper, the first green hydrogen tender will be released this year.
The government claimed it intended to offer 10-year contracts for 10,000 tons of renewable methane and 3,000 tons of green hydrogen.
According to Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, CEO of Hydrogen Europe, “the foundations of the first tender in Portugal for the centralized purchase of biomethane, synthetic methane, and green hydrogen have been specified, which will enable to start decarbonizing gas consumption in the country.”

The Simplex Ambientales initiative, a collection of steps to alter the environmental regulations for the development of hydrogen and renewable energy projects, was introduced by Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa in the middle of December.
The Portuguese government issued a request for hydrogen projects in 2021, and it received investment proposals totaling €16 billion ($16.9 billion). Lisbon’s commitment of €40 billion to this project is a component of its national hydrogen plan.
