POSCO Embarks on Green Hydrogen Project in Oman

With its sights set on net-zero emissions, POSCO is embarking on a major green hydrogen project in Oman’s Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Duqm.

Green hydrogen, often dubbed as the holy grail of clean energy, has been gaining considerable traction in recent years. Unlike conventional hydrogen production methods, green hydrogen is generated through a process that involves renewable energy sources, typically wind or solar power. The energy is harnessed to split water into hydrogen and oxygen through a process called electrolysis, producing clean hydrogen with no carbon emissions. This revolutionary energy carrier has the potential to revolutionize industries and play a crucial role in mitigating climate change.

0POSCO, one of the world’s leading steel producers, has committed to a net-zero emissions target. This means the company aims to balance the amount of greenhouse gases emitted with an equivalent amount removed from the atmosphere, effectively reducing its carbon footprint to zero. Achieving such an ambitious goal necessitates a significant shift toward cleaner energy sources, and green hydrogen is poised to play a pivotal role in this transition.

POSCO’s venture into Oman’s Special Economic Zone in Duqm is a testament to its dedication to sustainable practices. This strategic project aims to establish a robust green hydrogen ecosystem. While the specific details are yet to be unveiled, it’s expected to encompass the entire hydrogen value chain, from production to distribution and consumption.

Oman’s unique geographical location, abundant renewable energy resources, and strong commitment to sustainability have made it an ideal destination for green hydrogen projects. The country’s ambitious goals align perfectly with POSCO’s vision for a net-zero future. The Oman project will likely involve the production of green hydrogen using renewable energy sources, storage facilities, and a distribution network for various applications, including industrial use and potentially as a clean fuel for transportation.
