Estonian deeptech startup PowerUP Energy Technologies has initiated a groundbreaking shift in its strategic focus, moving from portable hydrogen fuel cell generators to a revolutionary hybrid solution.
The startup, currently engaged in a funding round, seeks to secure 7 million euros by April of next year, propelling its innovative energy endeavors to new heights.
The primary goal of PowerUP’s strategic pivot is to introduce a pioneering hybrid solution that combines hydrogen fuel cells with batteries. This shift is driven by the realization that 90% of their clients predominantly use batteries. By enhancing battery durability through hydrogen fuel cells, PowerUP aims to redefine the energy landscape and provide more efficient and sustainable power solutions.
PowerUP has successfully developed a modular 2.5-kilowatt system, scalable up to an impressive 40-kilowatt system. This innovation has found applications with Telia and the Dutch military, where it replaced a 60-kilogram battery bank with a 24-kilogram solution, offering double the electricity capacity. The company distinguishes itself globally with air-cooled fuel cells that are exceptionally light and compact, positioning them as a unique player in the market.
The potential impact of PowerUP’s hybrid solution is evident in its successful collaborations with sectors like construction, telecommunications, and healthcare in the Netherlands and Scandinavia. The introduction of safer hydrogen solutions, validated through tests with the Estonian Defense Forces, opens avenues for broader acceptance and global adoption of hydrogen fuel solutions.
