Provaris and Norwegian Hydrogen have joined forces to develop a large-scale production plant for green hydrogen in Ørskog, Ålesund municipality.

This groundbreaking project aims to establish one of the largest green hydrogen production facilities in the Nordic region. With the capacity to meet local demand and supply green energy to Europe, this collaboration represents a significant milestone in Norway’s journey toward a sustainable, emission-free future.

The primary goal of the green hydrogen plant is to accelerate the transition to an emission-free society and a green economy. By producing 40,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, the facility will significantly reduce CO2 emissions, amounting to over 500,000 tonnes per year. This substantial reduction corresponds to more than 20% of the emissions for Møre og Romsdal, making a remarkable contribution to combatting climate change.

The hydrogen plant, when fully developed, will have a capacity of 270 MW. The initial granted capacity of 20 MW is just the beginning, with an application for an additional 250 MW capacity already submitted and in the processing stage. The production of green hydrogen relies on electrolysis, utilizing renewable energy sources. This technology not only produces hydrogen but also generates oxygen and excess heat as valuable byproducts, which can be utilized by nearby industries for various processes.

The establishment of this green hydrogen plant will have wide-ranging impacts. In addition to reducing CO2 emissions, it will increase the availability of emission-free energy for the maritime industry, heavy vehicles, and industrial processes. Moreover, the project will create over 50 new jobs directly and generate numerous indirect employment opportunities. The regional value creation will be significant, fostering economic growth and prosperity in the area.

Norway has set ambitious targets to become a net-zero emissions country by 2050, and green hydrogen plays a vital role in achieving this goal. With a strong emphasis on renewable energy sources and the production of green hydrogen, Norway aims to be at the forefront of the global green shift. The collaborative efforts of Norwegian Hydrogen and its partners signify a commitment to building a sustainable future and reducing global emissions.

Norwegian Hydrogen is already a key player in the hydrogen industry in the Nordics. In addition to the Ørskog project, the company plans to start green hydrogen production in both Norway and Denmark. Its subsidiary, Vireon, will establish a network of hydrogen filling stations throughout the Nordic region. With a range of exciting plans and projects, Norwegian Hydrogen is actively contributing to the clean energy future and connecting nations in the pursuit of sustainability.

The development of a large-scale green hydrogen production plant in Ørskog, Ålesund municipality, is a significant step forward in Norway’s quest for a sustainable and emission-free future. Through advanced technology and substantial production capacity, this project will significantly reduce CO2 emissions and drive regional value creation. Norway’s commitment to green hydrogen underscores its determination to lead the global green shift. As the world moves closer to a clean energy future, the collaborative efforts of companies like Provaris and Norwegian Hydrogen pave the way for a more sustainable world.
