Polska Spółka Gazownictwa (PSG) has obtained a technical assessment certificate, marking the nation’s first step towards integrating hydrogen into its natural gas transmission network.
PSG, in collaboration with the Oil and Gas Institute – National Research Institute and Polish gas company “GAZ,” embarked on a groundbreaking project to construct a gas pipeline capable of distributing natural gas with hydrogen admixtures. The successful certification of the Jelenia Góra-Piechowice pipeline represents a crucial advancement in Poland’s journey towards a hydrogen-based energy future.
The certification confirms the pipeline’s capability to transmit a mixture of natural gas and hydrogen, with hydrogen concentrations of up to 20% by volume. Rigorous assessments, including product evaluations, construction technology scrutiny, and quality assessments, were conducted to ensure compliance with stringent standards set by the Oil and Gas Institute – National Research Institute.
Robert Więckowski, CEO of PSG, underscored the significance of the achievement, emphasizing its alignment with the Polish Hydrogen Strategy’s objectives. The successful integration of hydrogen into the gas transmission network not only furthers Poland’s energy transition goals but also positions PSG as a leading provider of clean hydrogen solutions in the Polish market.
Dr. Jacek Jaworski, Director of the Oil and Gas Institute – National Research Institute, hailed the completed investment as a pivotal step towards the energy transition. The innovative project sets a precedent for future hydrogen integration efforts, signaling Poland’s commitment to embracing sustainable energy solutions.
With an investment exceeding 11 million zlotys (2.5 million euros), the construction of the medium-pressure gas pipeline spanning approximately 7 kilometers demonstrates Poland’s dedication to fostering clean energy infrastructure and accelerating the adoption of hydrogen technologies.
