At the 9th Regional Symposium on Electrochemistry – South-East Europe, EnergyNews.biz had the chance to engage with Viktor Hacker, a prominent researcher with over 25 years dedicated to hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.
Our discussion centered on his current research focus, which intriguingly includes exploring alternative energy carriers such as iron alongside traditional hydrogen and fuel cells.
Both hydrogen and iron have distinct advantages and challenges. Hydrogen is well-known for its high energy density and clean combustion properties, producing only water as a byproduct. However, the storage and transportation of hydrogen pose significant technical and economic challenges. Iron, on the other hand, offers easier handling and lower risks but is still in the early stages of being developed as an energy carrier.
Hacker envisions a future where hydrogen and iron complement each other in the global energy mix. Ongoing research and development will continue to improve the efficiency and reduce the costs of these technologies, making them more competitive with traditional energy sources. “The future of energy lies in our ability to innovate and adapt,” he concluded.
