RWE orders two 100MW electrolyzers for German GET H2 project

Linde Engineering has been contracted by RWE to supply two 100-megawatt proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers for the GET H2 project in Germany.

With roughly two years before the goal date, GET H2, one of Germany’s most cutting-edge hydrogen projects, is accelerating. On the site of its Lingen gas-fired power station, RWE intends to put the first of the two plants into service in 2024.

One year later, the second plant is expected to begin operations. The two electrolyzers are a component of RWE’s plans to construct 300 MW of electrolyzer capacity at Lingen as part of GET H2 by 2026. The electrolysers will generate green hydrogen for industrial users using power from renewable resources.

GET H2 is one of the four hydrogen projects from RWE that have been shortlisted for funding under the IPCEI program since May 2021. The money from the federal government of Germany and the state of Lower Saxony is pending approval by the EU Commission under state assistance law.

RWE has nevertheless now placed the order to guarantee that the commissioning dates in 2024 and 2025 are still feasible even if state aid law permission is granted. If there was another delay, it would be impossible to satisfy these dates.

This does not yet suggest that an investment has been made. Therefore, it is crucial that RWE get the notification as soon as possible. A supraregional hydrogen infrastructure and the development of a hydrogen market in Europe are the two main objectives of the GET H2 cooperative project with national and European partners.

RWE has declared its goal to construct at least 2 gigawatts of electrolysis capacity for the creation of green hydrogen by 2030 as part of its “Growing Green” plan. Around the world, RWE is working in more than 30 projects that span the whole hydrogen value chain. The business is a global leader in the production of electricity from renewable sources. The business also specializes in creating and storing renewable hydrogen. Hydrogen can be requested at any time by industrial customers from RWE’s energy trading division.
