Sarawak is gearing up to establish a comprehensive plan for hydrogen development, aiming to stake its claim in the global clean energy market.
The Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, highlighted that the cornerstone of this initiative will be ensuring an adequate hydrogen supply.
The Premier emphasized that the production of hydrogen must be cost-effective to encourage widespread adoption of green energy. Enhancing fuel cell technology is crucial to fostering demand, particularly in public transportation where hydrogen could be a key fuel source.
Involvement in the hydrogen sector is expected to catalyze downstream activities, thereby propelling Sarawak’s economic growth. Abang Johari stressed the importance of leveraging advanced technology to cut hydrogen production costs and make it a viable alternative fuel. Nonetheless, he acknowledged the challenges of high production costs and the significant energy requirements for converting raw materials into hydrogen.
Sarawak plans to leverage its renewable energy resources for hydrogen production, aiming to boost its renewable energy generation from 5 gigawatts to 10 gigawatts by 2030. This strategy aims to make hydrogen production both energy-efficient and market-competitive.
