The Egyptian government has given Scatec and its partners permission to investigate the possibility of temporarily procuring electricity from the grid for an upcoming green hydrogen plant in Egypt.
Scatec and its partners, Orascom and The Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE), requested that the Egyptian Cabinet approve their request to expedite the project’s implementation ahead of the COP 27 summit that will be held in Egypt in November.
In the early stages of the project, the partners intend to draw power from the grid until they have built their own renewable energy capacity. When their green power plant goes online, it will supply the amount of electricity that was used to produce hydrogen before its commissioning.
In October, Scatec announced a partnership to build a green hydrogen plant with a capacity of 50 MW to 100 MW in Ain Sokhna in the Suez Governorate. Fertiglobe plc will receive its green ammonia, which will be made from the hydrogen and delivered to them. To power the electrolyser at the site, new solar and wind capacity will be built out in the future.
