Norwegian company Scatec is making significant strides in Egypt’s renewable energy landscape as it seeks partners for four groundbreaking hydrogen projects. The aim is to produce hydrogen and its derivatives, with a focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Hisham Nasr, the project developer at Scatec, revealed that the company’s projects in Egypt encompass the production of hydrogen and its various derivatives. These derivatives include the conversion of hydrogen into essential substances like ammonia, ethanol, or biofuels. This diverse approach underscores Scatec’s commitment to exploring innovative ways to harness the potential of hydrogen in clean energy solutions.

Addressing the scope of hydrogen production, Nasr emphasized that hydrogen could serve as both an energy carrier and a valuable component in fertilizer production. This dual functionality opens doors to a range of applications, highlighting the versatility of hydrogen in meeting Egypt’s evolving energy needs.

Scatec’s projects in Egypt boast an impressive production capacity of approximately two million tons of ammonia. These projects are distributed across different locations, with the Ain Sokhna region hosting the first project, capable of producing 70,000 tons. The second project scales this capacity to 140,000 tons, while the third project takes it to a remarkable one million tons. This significant production potential positions Scatec as a key player in Egypt’s transition to green energy.

In line with its commitment to sustainability, Scatec’s Ain Sokhna project is set to begin production in 2026, leveraging renewable energy sources entirely. This green ammonia production initiative represents a shift towards environmentally friendly practices. Notably, Scatec intends to direct the entire production for export, emphasizing the international demand for clean energy solutions.

Scatec’s pursuit of a green hydrogen future in Egypt isn’t a solo endeavor. Key players like the Egyptian company Orascom Construction (OCI) and the Emirati company Fertiglobe are collaborating on the green ammonia project in Ain Sokhna. This cooperative approach ensures the alignment of resources and expertise to drive sustainable change.

With four projects set to commence operations successively until 2028, Egypt’s green hydrogen ambitions are well on their way to realization. All production is earmarked for export, signaling the country’s intention to become a global contributor to clean energy.

Scatec’s endeavors in Egypt represent a pivotal moment in the nation’s journey towards a sustainable and environmentally conscious energy landscape. These projects have the potential to not only meet local energy demands but also establish Egypt as a significant player in the global green energy market.
