The Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) management has unveiled plans to harness green hydrogen to power the 1200 MW Singareni Thermal Power Plant (STPP) in the Jaipur area of Mancherial district, India. This visionary initiative marks a significant step in the global shift towards green and renewable energy sources.
The decision to integrate green hydrogen into the Singareni Thermal Power Plant aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change. Green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy sources like solar power, is emerging as a clean and efficient alternative to traditional hydrogen production methods. It offers the promise of decarbonizing energy-intensive industries and power generation.
Chairman and Managing Director N Sridhar’s directive to utilize solar energy for hydrogen production at STPP reflects the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The STPP already boasts a 10 MW solar power plant and a 5 MW floating solar plant within its premises. These solar installations will play a pivotal role in powering the hydrogen production process.
By utilizing solar energy, SCCL can produce green hydrogen without relying on fossil fuels, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and minimizing the environmental footprint of the power plant. In addition to the green hydrogen initiative, SCCL is actively pursuing environmental projects that enhance the sustainability of its operations. The Flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) project and Methanol project at STPP are prime examples of these endeavors. FGD technology reduces sulfur dioxide emissions, thus mitigating air pollution, while methanol production from renewable sources further reduces the plant’s reliance on conventional fuels.
SCCL’s commitment to sustainable energy extends beyond STPP. The company is embarking on a Geothermal project in Manuguru, exploring the potential of harnessing geothermal energy for power generation. Geothermal energy, derived from the Earth’s natural heat, offers a reliable and clean energy source that aligns with the global transition towards sustainable power generation.
Traditionally, SCCL has relied on thermal electricity and electrolysis chemical methods for hydrogen production. However, the adoption of green hydrogen production methods signifies a shift towards cleaner and more efficient energy practices.
