In Karelia, the mining and metallurgical business Severstal and partners are working on “green” hydrogen generation.

Ilya Pavlov, Severstal’s Director of Hydrogen and Innovative Decarbonization, made the announcement during a speech at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) in Glasgow.

“This is a project with a capacity of roughly 50 MW of electrolysis, which translates to tens of millions of euros or dollars in investment,” Pavlov explained. Karelsky Okatysh (iron ore mining complex in Severstal – TASS).

“We want to discover demand in Finland,” the Severstal manager stated, “because the logistical lever is extremely essential in hydrogen – the closer to the client, the better.”

Severstal, on the other hand, sees “a fair possibility for extending similar projects in the Karelian and Murmansk areas,” according to Pavlov.

“We are already discussing these ideas with a small group of possible investors, and we would be extremely glad if a larger coalition of international and Russian investors were interested in such initiatives,” the Severstal executive stated.
